Quick Ways to Find Old Friends on Facebook

Facebook is the 20th century way to interact with people near and far. You can let your friends know that you've just gotten engaged, that you've achieved a promotion or why you are currently enjoying life: simply by adding a status update which goes out to all your connected and confirmed friends as soon as you click enter.
Connecting with old friends is easy and is a good way to stay in touch. The following article will give you suggestions, ideas and step-by-step guidelines on how to do that.

1. Search by name
First I suggest you try to find your friend by name. Just use 'Facebook Search' to find the person you know. Add their full name into the search box and click the little magnifying glass (universal symbol for search). The number of mutual friends might be an indication that it is the person you are looking for. Then click on the "Add as Friend" button to the right of their search listing. Write a short message to remind them of your connection. It is always nice to get a personal note with a friend request, which will then be sent to that person. Once they confirm that they actually are friends with you, they will show up on your Friends List.
2. Through email address
Using the same search function on Facebook, you can also use an email address to search. Some people might have restricted the ability to find them via email address or to contact them, which might make it more challenging. Also remember that if you are looking for a female, they might have changed their last name due to marriage.
3. Search on Google
If the friend you are looking for is active on the Internet, you might be lucky to find some information on the net that helps you find them on Facebook. Simply go to Google, add their name and see what you can find out about them. If you have their name and place of residence, try adding these details in the search function on Facebook. This might reduce your options of potential people.
4. Check on mutual friends pages
If you have mutual friends, that you are already connected to, you might find them while searching your friend's friends list. Simply go to your friend's page, click on 'See All' and go through the list. They are listed by first name so it should be easy to find them, if they are there. Once you've found them, simply click the 'Add as Friend' button on the list.
5. School / University
Some schools and universities have an alumni page on Facebook which has been created by previous students. Go to the search function and add your school or university's name. Make sure you look under pages or groups, as you'll be more likely to find something. Once you found the page or group, you can join it or click 'Like' and search through the other members. An alternative might be to add a comment on the wall of this page and ask whether any other member has contact details for your friend.
Whatever way you choose, remember that it takes time to find someone. You might need several attempts. If, however, they are not active on the Internet and haven't joined Facebook, you might not find them. Good luck!
